Living a healthy lifestyle is more than weight loss and organic food. It includes cosmetics, stress management, house hold cleaning agents and just about anything that affects your physical and mental wellbeing. If you are thinking of about living a healthier lifestyle but don’t know where to start, this article is for you. These steps will help you build a strong foundation for long term sustainability and can be used for any transformation.
Identify Why You’re Choosing to Change.
It is important to identify why you’re choosing to live a healthier lifestyle before you start your journey. It will be virtually impossible to successfully navigate through this journey if your heart and mind are not 100% involved. This is a marathon, not a sprint. Your core decision to continue when times are hard will help motivate you to persevere. The reason can be as simple or as complicated as you want, but the decision must be yours. Ask yourself some questions. Do you want to enhance your beauty from the inside out? Is your physical or mental health in jeopardy? Do you want to improve your quality of life?
Make A List.
Now that you have identified one or more reasons why this journey is important to you make a list of all the areas of your life you want to change. Be as detailed as you want and take as long as you want. This is your list and no one will see it. Choose the easiest or less expensive areas to change first. This helps you reduce the list quickly as well as develops your confidence. I chose to start with skin care.
Take It Slow.
Building healthy habits takes time and work. It requires one to do the same thing over and over until it becomes muscle memory. The hard part is replacing bad habits with good ones. To successfully replace bad habits you need to take your time. Taking your time allows you to reprogram and develop your mind, making it easier for you to stick with it over the long haul. Instead of running 2 miles on day 1, start by walking briskly for a quarter of mile. Once you feel stronger, push yourself a bit harder with a light trot. Over time running 2 miles will be a piece of cake and you’ll be more motivated to stick with it.
There will be moments in your journey where you have more questions than answers. You’ve read tons of books and articles, listened to podcasts and watched infomercials. Now you are overwhelmed and lost. My best advice is ask someone. Join a Facebook group, community club or call a successful friend. So much can be cleared up with a simple conversation with successful people who have walked in your shoes. Be open and honest. Ignore those who have ill will towards you and remember, you can’t get what you don’t ask for. There are no dumb questions, just the ones you fail ask.
Mistakes are inevitable in your transition to a healthier lifestyle. You are changing deeply ingrained habits, coping with stress related to long term transformation and successfully balancing the day to day activities of your life. Give yourself some credit and forgive yourself. Guilt feeds all of the unhealthy habits you worked so hard to overcome. However, forgiveness is a building block of your transition. Forgiveness can help you accept the mistakes, identify where you went wrong and move forward. You have made and committed to one of the best decisions of your life. Don’t let guilt derail you.
Enjoy The Process.
The changes you make today are meant to last a lifestyle. There is no way you will be successful if you don’t find some joy in it. Everyday seek 1-2 things that you enjoy about your transition and saver it for a few moments. Really live in that enjoyment. You earned it, so don’t rush through it. Positivity helps keep you motivated and on track. No one wants to give up a good thing. Your transformation is no different.
